Improvisação, letras e harmonias complexas, além de toques de psicodelia, são a base do chamado Canterbury sound, movimento interno ao rock progressivo surgido no interior da Inglaterra.
Entre as bandas ligadas ao rótulo, estão Gong, Gilgamesh, Caravan e Soft Machine, pelas quais passaram grandes nomes do progressivo, como Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers, Alan Gowen e Phil Miller.
